Helping At-Risk Youth Succeed

Helping At-Risk Youth Succeed

Sometimes, at-risk youth aren’t who we might imagine them to be. They can come from all walks of life: rich, poor, middle class, black, white, or Native American; the list can go on ad infinitum.

It’s essential not to get bogged down with stereotypes, shame-based behaviors, or feel like you have failed as a parent. I have two sons, earn a low-middle-class wage, have a college education, and love my kids more than life itself. They were raised the same, in the same house, with the same parents, and yet, my youngest is an at-risk youth while his brother basically had an uneventful school experience.

Symptoms of an at-risk youth can manifest at any time. Here are some to look out for:

  • A significant drop in grades, despite trying or not
  • Fear and anxiety over going to school, to sleep, or taking part in age-appropriate activities
  • Repeated physical complaints
  • Tremendous amount of difficulty with concentrating at school or home
  • Acting out sexually or with eating disorders

When I worked on this side of things for the digital marketing firm I work for, we did not perform like a car salesman would but more like a realtor. At least my realtor! I have been with him for over twenty-two years and have referred him to many friends and family members who also still work with him. Why? Because he values relationships, not just the sale.

Their intended customer...

Ideas to Welcome Students Back to School

Ideas to Welcome Students Back to School

Well, it’s that time of year again, at least here in Michiga
n, where most schools start the day after Labor Day. There are many ways to make someone feel welcome and just as many ways to make students feel welcome when they return to school. As a parent, my ideas would probably vary compared to what a teacher or administrator would do to make kids feel welcome in returning to the hectic school year. For example, a...(to read full article go to)

  • ·         Clean out closets and dressers
  • ·         Organize clothes in two piles; keep and donate
  • ·         Sign up for an after-school program
  • ·         Set up transportation (i.e., busing, carpooling, rideshare, etc.)
  • ·         Clean out backpack from the previous year (check for molding mini muffins!)
  • ·         Buy school supplies
  • ·         Go school clothes shopping
  • ·         Create a meal plan for the first couple weeks of school
  • ·         Organize snack cupboard
  • ·         Get back on a regular sleep schedule (sorry, kids!)
